29K58 Tension Post.

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody, newbie here. Great site! I have a 29k58 that sews pretty good. The other day I noticed the thread tension post on top is being cut into by the thread I am using. I looked and the wire thread guide and the check lever are also being cut. I have been using coats upholstery thread, 100% bonded nylon, from a local store. Size says T 26. Is this thread wrong for this old machine, or do I need to use oil in the lube cup? Would polyester thread be less abrasive? Any ideas will be appreciated.

Thanks, Kelly

Kelly,

It takes years of sewing to get grooves worn,is it possible that it's always been that way & you just noticed it now?

Maybe that thread isn't nylon, but Kevlar thread!

Hi Bob. You might be right. The grooves may have been there and I just noticed them since they are now all shiny from the machine being used now. I think I am going to get some new parts just for spares. Can you tell me if the tension post is screwed in or pressed into the head. I see a hole under the post where a small pin punch could be used to drive the post up and out. I have already tried to turn it out using the top nut as a support for the split section. No luck though. That post is in there pretty solid.

Thanks for your reply.

Hi Wizcraft. I have double checked the thread I am using, and it is bonded nylon, coats and clark variety. I just didn't know if this old machine was made to run nylon, or if some softer thread was required. Running my finger nail along a piece of it I can feel each of the little twists in it. I thought maybe this thread was designed for modern units that have harder metal parts.

Thanks for your reply.

Kelly

Bob Kovar (aka: Sewmun) sells all kinds of replacement parts for Singer patchers and most industrial sewing machines. Order replacements for those worn parts and be done with it.

Kelly,

The tension post is pressed in(hammered carefully)so you'll have to take a hammer w/a nail & go in the hole underneath & pound it out.I do have the new posts in stock as Wiz says.
