Rawhide Report post Posted May 15, 2008 I'm thinking of ordering some bookbinding goat skin that Siegel has for sale. I would like to know if this is toolable and has anyone used this hide before and you general impressions or disappointments about it. Thanks, marlon
Regis Report post Posted May 16, 2008 Last winter I bought some of their veg tan goat in 2/3 oz and it does tool. Like thin/light cow you have to back with Creascent board to get best tooling definition. Actually learned that from Peter Main in a discussion on another board last year. You'll see a bit of a different texture on the goat. I use it for some linings where I want to tool something simple. It seems pretty tough so I think it would do very good for book cover Regis

I mount everything to crescent as I learned that from Peter as well. Marlon
ClayB Report post Posted May 16, 2008 HI Marlon, I bought several sides of this awhile ago when they had a really good sale on it. It does tool, but differently than regular leather. Seems like it's really tough, but also stretchy. If you glue it to a backing and practice a little, I think you'll be able to do some decent tooling on it. It makes great linings and that's what I have been using it for the most. I also want to try it for making the leather roses that some people showed on here awhile ago, and some leather feathers. yaklady Report post Posted May 29, 2008 Hi Marlon, Did you see that gun box I made for my son? It was in the World Leather Debut in Sheridan. The outside is covered with goat skin. I use a low-angle bade like Peter uses when I carve it, and don't apply much pressure. Goat is not something you want to try to get depth on, of course! The grain on it is beautiful, and it is easy to work with when you want to stretch and mold. I was perfectly happy with the results I got from it on the box. I have seen wallet made from goat, with a floral design on it. It looked great. Try it, you'll like it! Kathy

Are there pictures here of the box? I would definitely like to see it. Marlon
yaklady Report post Posted May 30, 2008 The gun case is under "Show Off, A guncase for my son", but I can post more pictures for you here. The inside is Hermann Oak and velvet pig suede. The outside is all goat. I found it to be very easy to work with on a project like this. Kathy

yaklady Report post Posted May 31, 2008 See the cool grain that is has? That's one thing I like about it. On a project like this that doesn't have a lot of tooling, the grain takes over. I like the stuff. Kathy
