Linen Thread

I am interested in making a few Civil War holsers and a few other period leather items. I have a couple of source questions:

1. Where can I get Linen or cotton thread, which I understand is period correct for these items.

2. Where can I get holster finials? This is the brass stub that holds the closing strap for the holster.

3. Anyone know of a source for maker's stamps?

Any insight is greatly appreciated.

2. I think I know what you mean. Little brass stubs with a rounded top and narrow waist, riveted on. The ones I have I bought at Tandy years ago. Ohio Travel Bag may have them. A search of Tandy/TLF did not turn up any.

3. Lot's of company's make these. Hidecrafters used to sell them. They might still. http://hidecrafter.com/

Tandy still sells them..ask for:SAM RROWN button

they have brass and nickle finish . one style you have to have

the anvil to set them . There is also another style

that is held together by a screw.

Did you look on ebay.com, there's lots of linen thread there. Try this auction, just copy the # and do a search for it.

If you're using the screw type Sam Browne studs (which save the expense of buying a setter but aren't truly authentic) put a drop of metal glue in the female part before screwing them up as it saves the screw dropping out later on.

Barbour do linen thread as well.
