billymac814 Report post Posted September 7, 2011 I need to make a few ankle holsters soon and I'd like to line them with thick felt instead of sheepskin as I think the felt would look better. I've seen this on the Bulman ankle holsters as well as some others. I tried finding it locally with no luck. Anyone else know what I should get and where? As it turns out there is a lot of variables when it comes to felt and while I know what I want to see it but I don't know what kind it is to order. I tried doing a search but "felt" can mean a lot of different things so I felt I had to ask. I'm looking for something about 1/4"-3/8" I think. Thanks. The thick felt will be very rough on the ankles.....use sheepskin.... if this is what you want to do contac a saddle maker close to you.
gary Report post Posted September 8, 2011 You can get stuff called orthopaedic felt which is made for use inside hard casts of plaster or fibreglass and is designed to be as comfortable as possible if worn for long periods - I mean, casts can be on for 6 weeks or more. Ordinary felt would probably be too 'firm'. Medical suppliers should stock it - it came in sheets about 1' x 2' and in different thicknesses. May be what you're looking for. Randy Cornelius Report post Posted September 8, 2011 Weaver Leather carries the felt I think you want, but I agree with others that the sheepskin makes the best padding. I make these ankle holsters all the time and feel the sheepskin works the best. I am afraid the felt would not hold up very long. Randy
Big O Report post Posted September 9, 2011 I just had occasion to make my very first ankle holster. I used sheepskin. It seemed a little too thick, so I trimmed it down with scissors. Worked like a charm.
