Bite Creeping Up Off Foundation

Recommended Posts

Does anyone else have trouble with their bites slipping up off the foundation on a 6x pineapple, I was doing a shoo fly this week and feel I had a pretty good groundwork for the knot but my bites keep insisting on riding up. I am using kangaroo lace. Do I need to go up to 8x? Thanks

Jamie

This happens sometimes when your foundation is to long. You may have to make your knot longer or your foundation shorter. Just a thought as I've had the same trouble in the past. Adding another bight might be enough to make it cover as it should make the knot a tad longer. But your knot may get way to crowded with that extra bight. If ya can show a picture then we can see how much it's slipping.

Here is a pic. I have cut some of the ground work back so it is not as noticeable, it was worse. My light colored string is all beat up from monkeying with it to fix.

Here is a pic of a shoo fly I did with a rawhide knot and keeper that turned out OK

The foundation work is paramount to a successful knot. In your shoo fly the foundation for your knot is shaped different than that of your 2nd one. Maybe the one with the raw hide has a different material and different shape at the top and bottom ends that will hold the knot much better than the one with kangaroo hide. I don't know what your foundation work material is for either one. But this could be the case where your material used made the difference between the two projects.

What I have had to do to solve the issue I describe above is to take the knot off the foundation work. Then fix the foundation work so that it will be a little rougher on the surface and if I have to reshape the top and bottom ends of the foundation work. Then I re-tie a new knot on to the foundation work.

Thanks for the tips Brian, I probably will re-tie. The foundation material for both Shoo flys are a para cord spanish ring covered and wrapped in self fusing silicone tape. The shape is different though. I like the silicone tape for it's lack of gooyness, but would like to get away from synthetic material as much as I can. Maybe I'll start a new thread on foundation materials. Thanks again for everyone's help.
