Latigo cinch - were to find brown

Ok,

i do use burgundy latigo, i love the siegel santa Ynez one, but when i repair old, even antique saddles, i'd like to match these old brown latigos and strings, sometime it look ugly with new burgundy strings...

Were can i buy quality brown latigo, it look to me to be alun, yellow center. Weaver do carry an indian tan but the weigth is too thin for latigo cinch, probably right for strings...they sell ot for making lace. It say to be not color fast, is that bad for horse skin? I can understand you dot want this if you have a grey horse.

And about alun, pure chrome and veg-retanned, what do you preffer? why? What thickness do you use for the latigo cinch (mounting side).

I never try pure oil chrome for that, is it good? Maybe hard to find in the good weight (8-10oz)

try Harvey J. Boutin in California... that's where I get my dark brown latigo. The phone number is:

(510)569-6100. The heaviest they have is a 9 -10 oz which is a bit lighter than I like for saddle latigos but if you ask them to try and pick you out the heaviest hide they can find it should be heavy enough.

Bighorn also makes a brown latigo. It is a bit stiffer but the color is brown. Harvey Boutin has several shades of brown in their "salz" brand. Chrome retan remains more flexible over time and use but is not as strong and the holes may tear out more easily. Herman Oak is making a new softer all veg tan. I saw it for the first time at Sheridan. Have ordered some but not tried it yet.

The Hermann sample of brown latigo I got from Weaver looks real nice, but it's a lighter brown. Wickett and Craig has a brown harness leather that looks nice per their sample too.

I don't know if they have any kind of catalog, I'm sure they have a price list. The new full veg tan latigo from Hermann Oak was pliable to wrap around a cinch ring and tie. Chrome retan is much softer than alum and is not as dry in the center as alum. The characteristics are unique; I don't know anything else to compare. Keith

Are the saltz latigo available as Back? would be nice...much less waste...what do you do with your latigo bellies? Mine sleep under my bench.

I made a search on the web and also found hide house in California that carry the salz. I see that they have cognac and brown, dont know what to order, i'd like a medium/dark brown.

They carry a huge inventory of Salz latigo, but I think they have others as well. The only problem we've ever had with it is it's really hard to slick the edges. Otherwise, it has little or no stretch and the usability is fantastic. I rarely have Salz bellies laying around! Hope that will help you a little!

I just receive my latigo samples from Boutin, look nice!! 3 lovely browns...russet is quite dark! The brown is dark havana and the cognac is a beautiful medium brown. Their red is good looking too, it is dark.

I know about any chrome-veg leather is not really burnishable, i use saddle soap on a rag for that.

I was very mad this month i ordered a 9-10oz red latigo from a canadian cie and i receive a 8oz side! GRRRR!!! I cannot do latigos cinches with this hide, now i am stuck with it untill i find a usage...Next time i will precise i NEED at least 9oz MINIMUM!!!!! on the butt of the hide...Dont know were they guage it, only place i find a 9oz was on the neck unusable part... :-| Let say it was the first and last time i'll order there. I even precise it was for cinches.

Thats the disavandtage when you dont have saddlery leather supplier around...and need to order by mail, hum...money wastage.

Pella, I do sometimes use 8 oz or so latigo for cinch tie straps. If it is good latigo, it is plenty strong, and leaves that much less bulk for stirrup leathers to slide over. This is especially helpful on performance saddles,........cutters, reiners, etc. Just a thought. JW

I do cut a strip 1¾ to use on my saddle to test it. You are rigth on less bulk but i do feel unsafe, so i make 3 fold instead of two around rigging...(and i am not sure if it is much stronger than 2 fold?) so as much (or more) bulk for me. I could use it for pony saddles maybe.

Probably with very best, strong and tight fibers leather it is ok. I find my hide stetchy so it will be even thinner than 8oz with usage. The boutin (salz) look less stetchy and is probably better for ligth weight quality cinches tie strap.
