Josh33806 Report post Posted January 11, 2012 G'day, I'm new here and I think this site looks like an amazing resource! I'm very glad I found it I am looking at making awl handles, however I have been struggling to find a supplier for a quality Ferrule. If anyone knew of a supplier of such an item I would be very grateful Thank you for your time, all the best for the new year! Josh

I have though an old awl handle which I´m going to duplicate, and I have found out that a possible start for a ferrule would be a .22 Hornet cartridge brass would be a start, to make a ferrule for a sewing awl. I´ll turn the handle from moose antler. / Knut

RogerNixon Report post Posted December 6, 2013 I have searched for collets and haven't come up with anything really suitable. The Dremel Multi-pro comes close You can get it for $10-$12 at places like Amazon. I think the best course would be to buy a CS Osbourne haft on ebay like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/C-S-Osborne-142-Palm-Awl-Haft-/110836956026. For under $20 shipped, you would have a good awl haft and you could replace the wood if you wanted something custom.
Tree Reaper Report post Posted December 6, 2013 (edited) Look for "Pin Chuck". https://www.google.c...bih=491&dpr=0.9 Edited December 6, 2013 by Tree Reaper
GerryR Report post Posted December 6, 2013 Look at "pin vises." They come with collet chucks for various diameters, and you can buy just the ones for the diameter(s) you need. The body can be cut and pressed / glued into your handle. Enco, as mentioned above, carries them: http://www.use-enco.com/CGI/INPDFF?PMPAGE=765&PARTPG=INLMK3&PMITEM=891-5434
RogerNixon Report post Posted December 7, 2013 Good stuff. I have a pin vise but the diameter is about 1". Some of those from Enco are much better, look to be about 1/2".
Tree Reaper Report post Posted December 7, 2013 If you want something heavier look at mini drill chucks. http://www.pjtool.com/keylesschuckwscrewgunadaptor.aspx
RogerNixon Report post Posted December 7, 2013 That looks just about perfect.

Tree Reaper Report post Posted December 19, 2013 (edited) It's very doable, I had this made in about an hour. An old mini chuck I had kicking around and never used will now get used. Edited December 19, 2013 by Tree Reaper
