Another Way To Kill An Evening

Recommended Posts

Howdy folks,

There is 2 basic deerskin pouches I have made today. It has been request from the person who likes sorts of Native American items. Started doing these I suddenly discovered I have no any beads, completely! :(

Well, I had to do my best having just leather on hands... so I did :)

Hope you like them. More pictures in my gallery.

Google-translate can do this kind of magic :head_hurts_kr::blush:

Toki onnistuu, mut vähän myöhemmin. Nykyään oon valitettavasti töissä 18/7, ei oo aikaa edes sännöllisesti lukea tätä forumia. :helpsmilie:

( Itse asiassa nämähän pussukat ovat odottaneet valmistamista Joulusta asti )

Looking great. My Mom and Grandmother would love them (we're all from the Spokane Tribe in NW Washington), so if that makes you feel better about the lack of beads. Actually, you might be amazed at how many traditional working items weren't all that adorned with beads. A little bit, but it was always more about function.

Here are some good examples of "working" bags here. Granted, these are all repro (couldn't find any pictures of the real thing). Some of them are beaded, but you can tell the ones that were designed for work and the ones that were designed for show.

another quick search showed more of what I was really looking for. You can see how yours fits right in there. I just noticed this one has instructions on how to make some of the items too. So, if you're asked to similar stuff there are some more ideas.

Cool, I hadn't gotten that far into that site yet. I'm going to have to go check it out some more and find some projects to make with my daughter.

Not everything was beaded though, so there is nothing wrong with your bags not having beads! Beaded stuff was often reserved for special occasions. Your bags look pretty good actually, and would be cheerfully carried by a lot of the people around here.

Before they had glass and brass trade beads, they would use bones, antlers, claws, hoof tips, teeth, stones, wood, feathers, leather fringe, fur, and seeds to make beads and trims. I've seen some very nice old beads made from sawn sections of small bones alternating with claws and sections of quills, for instance--it made a very unusual necklace. Paints, and/or incised or burned lines and patterns were also used for decoration on items where beads, fringe, or fur would get damaged or soiled.

So, don't get hung up on your item not having beads.

See, I think we have a consensus here - beads are overrated :specool:
