3 Dimensional Picture Carving

Where can I find a tutorial on 3 dimensional carving, specifically, how to build up from the back side to lift the subject of the picture.

Clay Banyai is doing a great series on the lessons from Jan Schoonover on leather embossing figure carvings.

They aren't free but the ones I have seen are worth the nominal fee.

There's also a project page at leathercraftlibrary.com I think it was like $3 search for embossing or repousse.
