TomSwede Report post Posted July 10, 2008 That is a very nice and smooth piece! I'm very impressed with the backgrounding it looks very smooth and even so I gotta ask you, when background with this tool, do you overlap or place it side to side? Wonderful work! Storm Thanks for the compliments, The stamp on the belt is a Rams Curl from Robert Beard. When doing the background I overlaped just a little. This is a forgiving stamp for backgrounding and gives the correct "punch dot" impression you would see on engraved firearms.
ETW Grumpy Report post Posted July 10, 2008 SWEET! Is that scroll from a pattern or did you do it yourself? Very nice contrast between the scrollwork and the backgrounding.

Washroad Report post Posted July 10, 2008 An American scroll style design. It is absofreakinlutely georgeous!!!
MattW Report post Posted July 10, 2008 The scroll design is entirely original. I used a scroll template set from GRS for most of it. Did some freehand to fill in big blank spaces. The contrast is from using feibings antique leather stain and using a damp paper towel to "pull" the stain off of the raised areas. Alot of research went into the design before I picked up a pencil. books by ron smith on drawing scrolls. studied everything in print with L.D Nimschke's work in it. Matt SWEET! custom79 Report post Posted July 11, 2008 Hi Matt. You nailed it when you said that a lot of research went into the project before you ever picked up a pencil. I find that when I've thought something out a great deal, the rest of the work goes so much more smoothly. Great piece of work. Cheers. C79
skipj Report post Posted July 11, 2008 Great job as always Matt. I like your inspiration from engraving, personally I appeals to me more than the floral patterns. Skip J
craftsman827 Report post Posted July 11, 2008 THIS IS ONE BEAUTIFUL GUN LEATHER ! ! ! The carving is great. One question, what tool did you use for the background of the scroll? If it was a bar grounder, which ones? Maker etc.
Dagr Report post Posted July 11, 2008 Awesome! That pretty much covers it
MattW Report post Posted July 12, 2008 The tool was A103 Background Tool from tandy. I used the straight row of four small bargrounder to do the edges of the design then filled in with the a103. I'm thinking about haveing a custom one made that would be closer to what you'd see on an engraved gun. THIS IS ONE BEAUTIFUL GUN LEATHER ! ! !The carving is great.
