srbonner Report post Posted April 9, 2012 Where can a guy go to find patterns to make a hand bag(briefcase) or attache case other than the ones offered in the Tandy book? Thank you.
Glendon Report post Posted April 10, 2012 By Tandy book, do you mean The Art of Making Leather Cases? Another good book is The Leatherworking Handbook. Really, I think people look at these books the wrong way. They think about following a pattern exactly, when they should be using them to learn the skills. Once you know the techniques, you can futz with the patterns to make whatever you'd like. I actually didn't follow the patterns exactly the first time. Use a basic pattern, but change the gusset style, or cut a different style in the flap, whatever.

Use a basic pattern, but change the gusset style, or cut a different style in the flap, whatever. I agree with you 100% here. The first briefcase I made, I used from a franken-pattern compiled from the main body of one briefcase, a strap style I use for closing saddle bags, and one of the many handles demonstrated at the beginning of the book... There's endless possibilities, and once you understand the theory behind it, you should have no trouble creating exactly what you want. I often just read through the theory over and over again to study.
