shadowryder Report post Posted April 19, 2012 Go 12 inches wide by 6 inches deep, then you want 3 inches front to back, make it a U shape with a flap coming from top back 3 inches over then 4 inches down the front, SO your main piece of leather is gonna be12 inches by 22 inches, your 2 side pieces are gonna be 31/2 inches wide by 6 inches plus another 4 inches for an intenal flap so 31/2 inches by 10 inches times 2. the extra 1/2 inch on the sides gives you room to punch holes for stitching or lacing. put all thes measurements down to card or thick paper and cut out to give you a good idea of what you got before you start cutting leather. hope this is of some help to you, I normally make round tool rolls but these are not very good for carving/tooling the U shape is better for that,

shadowryder Report post Posted April 20, 2012 That's a real nice looking tool roll Shadowryder! Thankyou very much,I love that mexican round braid but it is a real long job doing a roll with it and pretty tough on the fingers so looking for other lacing techniques i could use as well.that would look right on the piece. regards JJ. jayjay Report post Posted May 3, 2012 The lacing looks real good and i have a question about it. What size lace 1/8 or ? and do you space your holes the same distance as the width of the lace? When I do the round lace I never seem to get it look as tight as yours. When I do the round lace I never seem to get it look as tight as yours. Thank you Hi, thanks for the compliments on my lacing,Because the tool roll is a fairly large item I.E. 12"long x 5" diameter I have used a 5MM{3/8ths} lace with the holes punched at the same size and the wheel i use does 6 holes to the inch so yeah they will be aprox 3/8ths apart,I use the brass Jumbo Perma Lok needle with the screw in end for the lace but i have tapered it to a point for easier access to the holes. Though i will say its a real PITA doing those end pieces n getting all the holes to line up properly LOL!! I hope this helps you in some way and look forward to seeing some of your work, laters, JJ

Cyberthrasher Report post Posted May 4, 2012 Thanks for the info. I will try that out. Where do you buy your lace? I can only seem to find 1/8 or 5/16" lace. Thanks Springfield will do 1/4", but you have to call or email for it. I've heard lots of good things around here about y-knot too, just haven't ordered anything from them yet since I've always been able to get it from Springfield for about the same price. http://y-knotlace.com/
paws Report post Posted May 8, 2012 one thing I do on my toolbags to get the holes to line up for the braiding is.... I wet the leather 'ends', then use pop rivets (aluminum) to line up all the holes, the next day, after it drys I lace up the bag. It makes my Mexican Round braid go way smoother.... you might want to give it a try....
