Tim Schroeder Report post Posted June 26, 2012 Had to try them again. Not sure how much better they are. St. Peter looks like he might make it tough to get thru the Pearly Gates. Faces are turning out to be pretty tough to make look good.
Northmount Report post Posted June 26, 2012 Faces are the hardest parts to do. The eyes make a huge difference too. I think you have done a really great job. Figure carving takes more of an artistic bent in my opinion. Much of the floral, steam punk and other types can be done with a mechanical approach by someone with little artistic skill if they are careful and follow an established pattern and routine. Figure carving needs someone with an artistic eye. CTG
Bob Blea Report post Posted June 28, 2012 I think you did a fantastic job. I'm not a figure carver, though I am trying to become better at it. I think what you have done looks very good. I paint in oils too and while I can paint landscapes or objects, I have never had much sucess painting a person. I think that because we are so hard wired to recognizing human features and expressions, it take a lot of talent to represent the human form well and not have things look out of proportion. Thus I think representing a person, either in painting or in sculptures on leather, is very hard and takes a lot or artistic skill. From my point of view, you did a great job. WinterBear Report post Posted June 29, 2012 These are fantastic. I liked the first set, and then I saw where you had redone them, and they are even better. Will you finish these into a Bible cover or something similar?
Tim Schroeder Report post Posted June 30, 2012 Here's some pictures of the finished bible cover. Don't know about the antiquing on the figure carving. Anyway it's done and my A/C tech will be happy since he fixed my A/C last summer. Nice to be able to barter for services. Learned alot on this project. Ready to try a Badled Eagle busting out of a American flag airbrushed on one of my tournament backgammon boards.
