Members Stewart Posted August 9, 2012 Members Report Posted August 9, 2012 (edited) Hi, Can you darken leather with neatsfoot than apply a stain on top of it afterwards? My brain can not get past the visual part of seeing how something would look like when finished. Joe Edited August 9, 2012 by Stewart Quote
Members 28ist Posted August 9, 2012 Members Report Posted August 9, 2012 Yes. I usually spray on a light coat of neatsfoots or two before applying dye. The neatsfoot slightly darkens the leather giving me an idea of what color of dye to use. In some cases the neatsfoot adds enough color that I don't use any dye. After dying I spray on another light coat of oil before proceeding. Quote
Contributing Member JLSleather Posted August 9, 2012 Contributing Member Report Posted August 9, 2012 Oil is not a "sealer" so it won't keep further treatments from penetrating. No problem. Some folks actually prefer to oil before dye. Quote
Moderator Art Posted August 9, 2012 Moderator Report Posted August 9, 2012 In the harness industry, they use a dye (stain) that they put in the neatsfoot oil. I know Weaver sells it and most probably Beiler's. Art Quote
Members Stewart Posted August 10, 2012 Author Members Report Posted August 10, 2012 (edited) thanks guys for the responses. The guy wants the untooled area darkened and the rest black. Just in case it looks bad I know now I can stain or die it. Top still needs to be tooled. Used the smallest basket weave tool. Joe Edited August 10, 2012 by Stewart Quote
