ajc86mo Report post Posted August 29, 2012 How Ya'll doing? I'm new to the sight as well as leather working. I'm making a Tripping Collar for my brother who team ropes and i know some of ya'll might say well then y not make a breast collar. He prefers the tripping collar for whatever reason. I have 2 pieces of saddle skirting about 1/8" thick, I picked up at Tandy's. Should I double up on the leather or do ya'll think a single piece will suffice? The tripping collar will be 5"s at its widest point and tapper to 3 1/2"s. I would appreciate any help/ comments I can get. Thank you in advance for you assistance. Very Respectfully, AJ
cgleather Report post Posted August 30, 2012 (edited) I would double it up. Most tripping collars are pretty thick. If you don't build it rough side out. Here is a pic of a single ply Arizona style Breast collar. This is heavy Harness Leather Edited August 30, 2012 by cgleather
ajc86mo Report post Posted August 30, 2012 Thank you cgleather for the advice, will double up for sure. The pic looks great! did you make it?

If in fact it is 1/8th (about 8/9oz.) you should back it up with something like Latigo or Harness leather, these are better to resist sweat. Veg-tan will absorb moisture, latigo and harness leather have oils and waxes in them to resist it. Use a collar that he likes for your basic pattern and go from there. Just my thoughts, Edited August 30, 2012 by rickybobby
ajc86mo Report post Posted August 31, 2012 Rick, Thanks for the advice, I didn't think about the leather absorbance. I will have to get some latigo or harness leather for the backing considering I'm close to completion on the frontside. V/R, AJ
chapper Report post Posted August 31, 2012 You might check with HIDEHOUSE. I have been buying what they call "Assorted Latigo" 8/10oz, it has made great lining leather for my breast collars and rear cinches. But you definitely will want to line this collar.
