1911 Holster

Hey guys my buddy has a bunch of leather working equipment. He said I could use what he has to build myself a holster. I figured I would save some money and do just that. I need help making a good holster, I'm not trying to showcase my work etc, I need a good duty holster here is, kind of what i had in mind, I do need to find a tutorial on you tube and ask some questions here.

Wondering if anyone knows how to do this and has a tutorial. Like I said I m not looking for beauty just something functional, (extremely functional) Im going to tomorow to buy a piece of leather. What else do I need. Oh I also need magazine holders. Like I said I’m not trying to learn the trade just trying to save some money.

Without knowing what equipment your buddy has, you'll likely need:

• leather
• pattern
• something to cut the leather
• something to punch the belt slots
• leather cement
• edger
• burnishing tool
• boning tools (bone folder)
• dye
• neetsfoot oil
• gum tragacanth to help burnish the edges and smooth the flesh interior
• acrylic or wax finish
• adjustable groover
• something to stitch with
• snaps if you need a retention device

I'm sure I missed something... You can improvise with most of the tools - but I assume your friend probably has everything you need.

nice I bought my leather today, Im going to look at some videos on youtube and your videos too. My questions is should I use a layer of hide then leather 3 layers pancaked together to hold the form better?

the Galco Fletch rig that you referenced is a pretty basic pancake OWB with a thumb release.... most pancake OWB's like the Fletch, unless they're lined, are only 2 layers total of leather.....

something else you need to keep in mind if you're planning on doing a thumb release is what condition you plan to carry you 1911 in.... a rig with a thumb release designed for condition 1, cocked and locked, will rarely fit the same gun carried conditions 2-4, hammer down.... you also need to pay a bit of special attention to way you work and mold the release around the safety as an improperly worked release can be prone to disengaging the thumb safety....

This probably won't be a popular answer around here but if you're looking to do just one holster you'd probably be better off, from both a functionality and money standpoint, to just buy a quality holster.

I hear what your saying Bronson I think i can make a decent holster after I do some research. I dont want to totally learn this trade but it do want to make some things like maybe some belts, but nothing amazeing like you guys just some good stuff. The only way i carry my 1911 is locked and cocked.
