Alaskan Report post Posted October 11, 2012 I am about to make my first project. A belt from vegtan, that will be dyed light brown. i intend to dye the edge a dark brown. I am not sure about the order of operations? I was going to follow Bob Park's post for the edging: http://leatherworker.net/edging.htm However, if I am going to dye the belt face, should I do that before or after the edging? I figured getting even the smallest amount of parafin on the face of the belt will ruin the dye job. Thoughts? Thanks.
particle Report post Posted October 11, 2012 I assume you're not stitching the belt to a lining? Regardless, I dye the face prior to assembly. Then, I burnish the edge with water so I get a clean, rounded edge. Then, once the edge is completely dry, I dye the edge. Then, I burnish. If you dye the edge before doing any burnishing at all, it's very hard to control the dye for a clean edge and it soaks up a ton of dye, meaning you can only take very short strokes before you have to load your dauber again with more dye. All that starting and stopping makes it hard to get a rhythm going and maintain a clean edge.
Alaskan Report post Posted October 11, 2012 Thank you for the response. No, I am not stitching the belt to a lining, as I am using 9-10oz hide. I planned on dyeing the face and then using leather balm/atom wax on top. This is what I uderstand: 1) Sand and Edge 2) Dye face 3) Burnish and dye edge 4) leather balm/atom wax face 5) polish edge 6) impress women with my new belt

If she's smiling, is it.. A: Cos she likes the happy dance? B: The fact that you're nekkid except for a belt...or, is it.. C: The quality and workmanship of the aforementioned belt that is cheering her up?? Best bet is do the happy dance, then hand her a questionnaire form..
