Members sherlockian100 Posted November 6, 2012 Members Report Posted November 6, 2012 I live in Claifornia and can't easily get Pro Oil Dye. My question is, is it worth a drive to Las Vegas to get Oil dye. vs. Using the spirit and Eco Flo dyes I can get readily in Cali. When doing straight solid dyeing or using an air brush, would it be worth driving out to get some, is the quality that much better? Would it be noticably different. I've never tried it, so I'm not sure. I've had one or two people tell me it's better, but better is relative. Would it be that much better? Thanks in advance for your input? Quote
Moderator Art Posted November 6, 2012 Moderator Report Posted November 6, 2012 There are a lot of "good" reasons to go to Vegas! As I read the law (not a lawyer) only the 4 oz sizes are restricted. Call Kevin at SLC and see if he will ship you a quart. And yes, the spirit dyes like Pro Oil Dyes are better. Air brushing applies a thinner coat that may not soak into the leather that much so I am on the dip or flood on team there as the airbrushed dye seems to be more susceptible to scratches. For edge fades you have to use the airbrush. I cut dyes at least 50% with DEA, but more when spraying. With diluted dye you can just put more on if you want it darker, you don't have to wait till it drys. Factories are the ones using water based as they have the money to develop processes for it. NVLeatherWorx Posted November 15, 2012 Report Posted November 15, 2012 Yes, the oil dyes and spirit dyes are much better. They have great penetration into the fibers and don't rub off like the eco stuff and other water based versions. I have been using them for over 30 years and stick by them. I have tried the water-based products in an effort to feel like I was doing my part but you just don't get the same results. If you have to go to Vegas to get them, make it a weekend trip and enjoy yourself. Quote
