cbaunni Report post Posted February 16, 2013 Hi All, Attached is my first ever try at leather craft. I have a Samsung Galaxy SII so I decided to make a pouch for that. Please let me know what you guys think about it. While making it I had trouble tracing the image on to the leather - how wet should the leather be when I trace? mlapaglia Report post Posted February 16, 2013 Very nice. When transferring the design the leather needs to be "cased" You wet it and then let it almost return to its original color. It should still be cool to the touch on your cheek. From the looks of the tooling I would say it was too wet when you worked on the design. The stitching is great. All in all very good and a great start. Welcome to the addiction. Michael

cbaunni Report post Posted February 17, 2013 Thanks a lot for all the comments - it has given me a lot of confidence to go ahead on my next project. @Micheal: You are right, the leather was too wet when I was working on it. I will follow your advise in the ongoing project.
WScott Report post Posted February 17, 2013 This is a good start for basic technique videos from Tandy Leather "http://www.tandyleatherfactory.ca/en-cad/en-cad/Leathercraft-Videos.aspx"
olds cool Report post Posted February 17, 2013 The case itself looks fantastic. Much better than my first wet formed piece. Once you get the casing figured out and work on your tooling a bit you'll be well on your way. The casing just takes some experience and the tooling takes lots of practice. Even after your 3rd or 4th piece, you'll see a huge improvement . Each time I tool, I figure oout just a little bit more than the last piece.
cbaunni Report post Posted February 18, 2013 @oldschool Thanks for the encouragement. I have read a bit more on casing the leather and am eager to start carving on the ongoing work..hopefully it will all work out.
lightningad Report post Posted February 18, 2013 Really smart looking case! very impressive. As well as casing the leather correctly, you also need to make sure the table under your leather is rock solid when stamping. I bought a cheap granite chopping board at the supermarket and whilst the table under the board is not very solid, its made a world of difference to the result. Having the stone under your leather will really help your tools to make a stronger impression. adam
