Members bernie Posted February 23, 2013 Members Report Posted February 23, 2013 (edited) I was recently asked to make a 32 plait 3 tone bull whip for a customer. The commission was that the body of the whip had to look like a coral snake colours yellow, red, yellow black. The main thing and the most difficult was to make sure that the strips of colour went around the whip in one ring and not all over the place. Might look easy but it took a bit of working out. The handle design was left up to me.This is the photo I was given to work off.http://snakesfb.blogspot.com.au/2013/01/coral-snake.html Edited February 23, 2013 by bernie Quote

Members MakerUnknown Posted February 23, 2013 Members Report Posted February 23, 2013 (edited) Superb! Unbelievably beautiful. Not knowing too much about whips, what is that white area above the handle? I can't see what's going on there in the photo? Edited February 23, 2013 by MakerUnknown Quote

I can't see what's going on there in the photo? That is an engraved sterling silver ring. When asked I supply engraved silver rings with initials or logos. I make each ring and engrave it myself to fit the whip. Quote

Members bernie Posted February 24, 2013 Author Members Report Posted February 24, 2013 That IS amazing. How many hours went into making that? About 50 hours give or take an hour or perhaps two or three. You kind of get lost in time when your making something like this. Quote
Members Peter T Posted February 26, 2013 Members Report Posted February 26, 2013 I know the lost in time thing. I can never really accurately answer that question when I'm asked how long it takes to makes some of the whips I make. I have started a few times to keep track of the hours but get so lost in time I forget to write it down! But that's one of the beauties of whipmaking for me. I appreciate and respect your work and craftsmanship, Bernie. Pete Quote

All to true. Lucky there are still some people out there who can recognize quality and are willing to pay for it otherwise we would all be on welfare. Quote
Dangerous Beans Posted March 1, 2013 Report Posted March 1, 2013 A truly beautiful piece of work Bernie, the evenness of the pattern is amazing. I am a huge admirer of your work. Nigel Quote
Members Bantoro Posted November 20, 2024 Members Report Posted November 20, 2024 It sounds like a fascinating and intricate project! Crafting a 32-plait bullwhip with such a specific color pattern (yellow, red, yellow, black, mimicking a coral snake) must have been quite a challenge. The key difficulty was definitely ensuring that the color strips formed a consistent and neat pattern around the whip, rather than getting mixed up or out of place. It's impressive that you were able to figure out how to make it work and execute the design so precisely. The freedom you had with the handle design must have been a fun aspect of the project, allowing you to put your personal touch on the whip. Quote
