horseplay Report post Posted March 31, 2013 I've been playing around for a couple years with leather sewing and tooling. Now I'm getting more serious and looking to upgrade some of my tools from the cheap Tandy ones. I currently have the yellow head Tandy mallet and looking to buy a higher end maul or mallet. Most of my tooling projects are smaller in size so I'm not spending all day tooling something but I do alot of hole and slot punching. I see there are several sizes and weights so I'm not sure which would be best if I'm only choosing one. And also would be best to go maul or mallet? terrymac Report post Posted April 1, 2013 . I can't speak highly enough of my Bearman maul. Ed the Bearman is a member of this site and will fix you right up. He utilizes a special material and, and his workmanship is first class. A 16 oz. would be a good general size to use. Terry
Cyberthrasher Report post Posted April 1, 2013 If you want to get a BearMaul, just get ahead of Ed and let him know what you're doing with it. He'll be able to advise you on weight. most people prefer about a 16 - 18 oz for general tooling. Punching holes and slots, you may want to go a little heavier. camano ridge Report post Posted April 1, 2013 I have had two Bearman Mauls for about a year and a half. I couold not be happier. If you search the forums here for Bearman Mauls you will find several threads and see many pictures. Here is a link to Bearmans mauls and burnishers, they are made by both Ed and his son Beary. http://leatherburnis.../BearMauls.html Here are my mauls.
