LeatherHead99 Report post Posted April 3, 2013 Can someone tell me what the difference is between the Eco-flo Super Shene and the other eco-flo professional finishes? Right now I use the eco-flo professional matte finish along with the professional waterstain dyes. Doe the Super Shene provide more protection against moisture or something, or is it pretty much the same as the gloss / matte professional finishes. Thanks
Glendon Report post Posted April 3, 2013 Keep in mind that I only have a little experence with eco-flo. I jumped away from the brand very quickly in my leatherworking experence. As I understand it, they are both acrylic finishes. The pro version probably has tighter controls on quality and on ratios and the like, but I would think they are fairly close to being the same. LeatherHead99 Report post Posted April 4, 2013 I just started dabbling in the craft and only have experience in the Eco-Flo. The professional dye is what the Tandy salesman suggested based on my project. The thing I did notice with the few colors I've practiced with is the black won't show true black without a gloss coat. It turns into a faded black color once it dries, even after multiple coats. Not sure if this is the norm for black dyes of different brands or not. I was just curious if there was a difference in the Professional Eco-Flo finishes. I need something that's gonna help lock in the dye and keep the moisture out. Whats the deal with the Eco-Flo dyes? Why does it seem no one likes them? I did try a regular eco-flo dye that I bought on sale, and it rubbed off alot when it became wet. It did even so after multiple coats of finish. I tried the professional dye on some practice pieces and it doesn't seem to rub at all when the finish is applied.
Tina Report post Posted April 4, 2013 Whats the deal with the Eco-Flo dyes? Why does it seem no one likes them? . If you ever try some spirit dye (Angelus or Fiebing brands as a few examples) you will se the difference right away. EcoFlow is just an acryllic "paint" that lays ontop of the leather (like taking some hobbypaints and delute it with water). EcoFlow is in my book a to bigger compromise for getting a nature friendly product out on the market. Real dye penetrates the leather deep and the colors comes out vivid and bright. The real dyes is harder to work with, ther's no second chance and one has to be more careful, it will take some practice but the overall finish more than makes up for it :-)

Studio-N Report post Posted April 4, 2013 I dislike eco flow............basically as I see it...crap and professional grade is more expensive crap I agree that the eco-foo-foo stuff is crap. Super shene is an acrylic. Now, the pro STAINS (not dye) are not. They are made by Fenice in Italy and they made a big disservice putting their eco-foo-foo label on it. Many people immediately came to the same conclusion that it was crap probably without every trying it because of the name. Having said that, the Fenice finishes are a cellulous lacquer. I didn't like the gloss finish, but the semi-gloss looked pretty good on a couple of purses I did in the antique gels. It did not lift any color either. Just stating the facts. I have no association with Tandy, and in fact I hate the SOBs. Glad I got a payout in the lawsuit against them. cheers!

Studio-N Report post Posted March 7, 2015 No dilution. applied directly using sheepswool. Now I will also add that I have tried using the Pro finish as a resist, but it did not work. Clear-Lac is still the clear winner there.
