DougD Report post Posted April 11, 2013 (edited) hi, new to stitching and to the Forum. I've been working through stitching some scrap pieces trying to get the hang of beveling, using a pony, etc. I'm having a lot of trouble pulling the needles through (saddle stitch, lock stitch, ...) and find it almost impossible to do both at the same time. everything I've seen on you tube for example, seems to be a lot less effort than what I'm experiencing. I'm using the needles that the guy at tandy recommended (1195 I think) and the eye seems huge to me. What size diamond awl a needles/thread are most using to make this task easier.... thanks. Doug. mikesmith648 Report post Posted April 11, 2013 "I'm using the needles that the guy at tandy recommended (1195 I think) and the eye seems huge to me." 1st problem is the statement above!! Most of the Tandy people are not as knowledgeable as they should be...........although some are better than others. Watch the video on youtube by Nigel Armitage................then call Sheridan leather outfitters.......or another "real" leather supplier..........and get the right stuff. It doesn't say what you are trying to sew........that and pics would help in directing you better.
DougD Report post Posted April 11, 2013 what is 'the right stuff' I was trying to practice in order to sew some Dyer style moccassins. So fairly heavy leather. getting better at spacing, etc.
mikesmith648 Report post Posted April 11, 2013 Douglas awls are considered some of the best, with Osborne following a near second. I am pretty sure that only Sheridan Leather carries the Douglas ones. Springfield Leather carries the Osborne ones and they are less expensive. Either on can also help with needle selection, depending on the weight of thread you are wanting to use. Both suppliers are available by clicking the banners above or going to supplier directory on this site. Mike

BearMan Report post Posted April 12, 2013 Hi The Bob Douglas "Slim" blade is for 7 stitches per inch or higher. I use the Osborne 517-1 needles for most all hand stitching. Sheridan Leather is the only place to get the Douglas Awl blades. Thier blades come sharp, & stay that way for a long time. They are a bit pricy,, but they are worth it. $27.00 plus shipping. I hope this helps,,, Ed
