How Do I Make The Sides Of This Bag?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, im new to leather working and so far so good with some saddlebags I have made.

My friends birthday is coming up and I want to be able to make this bag for his bike.

The sides of the bag look interesting...

Anyone have any tips of what they are doing?

Well if I had to guess I would say that they were just regular gussets and are folded in instead of out. THEN, I zoomed in and it doesn't look like there are any edges folded in, it looks like a plain oval. With that being said they have some type of lining attached to the inside and holding it all together with the lining. I doubt they are really being held on by those two stitches and glue. Well I hope not any way. Here is a pic of one I made and thought it was the same type except they reversed the way I have the gusset folding out and stitched. You got me lol.post-30767-0-44325100-1367873955_thumb.j

Hey Math,

Refer to The Art of Making Leather Cases, Volume 1 by Al Stohlman, page 26....I think you will find the technique you are looking for there. It's basically a box stitch following a curved edge (I think)...

have a look at this from the Stohlman Book--hope it helps!!!

Good call! I think you might be on to something there :)

Agreed with above, it looks like a box stitch to me, with the stitch going on an angle through the leather. Never done it myself, but Stohlman's stitching and case books walk you through it.
