mathbishop Report post Posted May 6, 2013 Hey everyone, im new to leather working and so far so good with some saddlebags I have made. My friends birthday is coming up and I want to be able to make this bag for his bike. http://www.brooksengland.com/images/cache/shop/shop_bags/tool_bags___holdalls/challenge_tool_bag/pictures/2794_w800_h600_vamiddle_jc95.jpg The sides of the bag look interesting... Anyone have any tips of what they are doing?
ReneeCanady Report post Posted May 6, 2013 Well if I had to guess I would say that they were just regular gussets and are folded in instead of out. THEN, I zoomed in and it doesn't look like there are any edges folded in, it looks like a plain oval. With that being said they have some type of lining attached to the inside and holding it all together with the lining. I doubt they are really being held on by those two stitches and glue. Well I hope not any way. Here is a pic of one I made and thought it was the same type except they reversed the way I have the gusset folding out and stitched. You got me lol. Anyone have any tips of what they are doing? Hey Math, Refer to The Art of Making Leather Cases, Volume 1 by Al Stohlman, page 26....I think you will find the technique you are looking for there. It's basically a box stitch following a curved edge (I think)... have a look at this from the Stohlman Book--hope it helps!!!
mathbishop Report post Posted May 6, 2013 Thanks for the help, will definitely look into those

JakeDiebolt Report post Posted May 11, 2013 Agreed with above, it looks like a box stitch to me, with the stitch going on an angle through the leather. Never done it myself, but Stohlman's stitching and case books walk you through it.
