Members lws380 Posted June 26, 2013 Members Report Posted June 26, 2013 (edited) Does anyone know if a 3 inch 1911 dummy gun will work as a mold for an EMP? Thanks. Edited June 26, 2013 by lws380 Quote
Members particle Posted June 26, 2013 Members Report Posted June 26, 2013 Technically, no, since the EMP and 3" .45 ACP 1911 are physically different sizes. However, while I let the customer know I don't suggest it and I always warn the customer I can't guarantee the fit, I also let them know I've had numerous customers go ahead and order it and they were perfectly happy with it. Here's a comparison image I found a while back. Quote
Members lws380 Posted June 26, 2013 Author Members Report Posted June 26, 2013 Particle, Thanks, I thought they were slightly off. I prefer not to 'wing it" and use a close mold. So I will turn down the request. Thanks again! Quote
Members Colt Hammerless Posted June 29, 2013 Members Report Posted June 29, 2013 Wow! I had no idea the EMP was so different from other 3 inch 1911s. I have a Duncan's EMP dummy, but looks like I'll need to get another dummy to do regular 3 inchers. Quote
Members particle Posted June 30, 2013 Members Report Posted June 30, 2013 I wish the dummy makers would start selling EMP dummies. I've sold dozens of holsters for it. But, like I said previously, I always warn the customer the 3" 1911 isn't an exact fit, but I've also had multiple customers order my 3" holster only to reveal after the order was complete that it fit their EMP perfectly (I had no idea at the time it was for an EMP when I was building the holster). All that to say, don't be afraid to try it - just know it's not an exact match. If you study the picture closely (and imagine the barrels being flush on the tips), you'll see the majority of the difference is actually the dimension from the top of the slide to the bottom of the pistol. Members Ed in Tx Posted July 1, 2013 Members Report Posted July 1, 2013 Just a thought, I wonder how much the other physical dimensions are similar to a Springfield 1911 in say a 4" model? If you were making an open bottom holster you might be able to use a 4" dummy for most of the molding. Like I said just a thought that might save you from buying another dummy. Quote
Members Colt Hammerless Posted July 4, 2013 Members Report Posted July 4, 2013 Duncan's makes dummies for the EMP. At least they used to, I would assume they still do. I looked at their updated inventory the other day, and didn't see one. You might contact them and see if they'll make you one on their next production run. Be advised, they mold them with the safety OFF (dang it!!!) I still need to modify mine by grinding off the safety and putting a different one on in the proper position. Paul Quote
