Members wyomingcowboy Posted July 15, 2013 Members Report Posted July 15, 2013 Hello experts! I am wanting to make a guitar strap for my 13 year old nephew for a b-day gift in early August. I found out he has no strap buttons so I called a music store to see if they could add them and they said yes, but not on a classical guitar as they are not designed for them. He said I would need a special strap which they could get. My questions is what does this special strap look like? I did a few google searches for pictures and found nothing. Could I easily make one of these with my limited skills? Thanks, Nate Quote
Members Slow Learner Posted July 15, 2013 Members Report Posted July 15, 2013 You found nothing because there really is nothing. The end (where the end pin is located) of the guitar can not support the weight and might damage the guitar. Classical players typically don't play standing so there is basically not need for a strap. Willie Nelson uses a strap the hangs from his neck with a hook on the end that hooks on the bottom of the sound hole. I don't like them because of potential for damaging the guitar sound hole. Or you could make a hammock v that hangs from the neck and just set the guitar in the hammock when playing. Quote
Ambassador pete Posted July 15, 2013 Ambassador Report Posted July 15, 2013 unless it's a really valuable instrument, there's nothing that says that you can't drill a hole and put a(standard) guitar button on it. Same with the neck. I've done it to my mandolins- 2 are valuable pieces and I don't want to sell them. I use hem too much! pete Quote

Members Cyberthrasher Posted July 23, 2013 Members Report Posted July 23, 2013 Could I insert another piece of wood inside the guitar to give a strap button a little more to hang onto? You "could", but I wouldn't recommend that. Any addition like that would effect the tonal qualities of the guitar. here are some images of classical guitar straps. They're designed to hook onto the sound hole and suspend over the player's neck. http://www.guitaraffecs.com/images-straps/classicalcomfortstrap.jpg http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessories/levys-nylon-classical-guitar-ukulele-strap?source=3WWRWXGP&gclid=CIrOx6yFxrgCFYU5QgodkQsAsw&kwid=productads-plaid^34106004482-sku^365027000001000@ADL4MF-adType^PLA-device^c-adid^14207111402 Quote
Members wyomingcowboy Posted July 23, 2013 Author Members Report Posted July 23, 2013 The guitar belongs to a 13 year old and I'm sure it's a pos for the most part. That being said I don't want to ruin the thing. Hmmmmmm decisions decisions. I would love for him to keep this strap over the years. Even after he gets a steel string Know where I can find a little hook like that? Quote
Members Cyberthrasher Posted July 23, 2013 Members Report Posted July 23, 2013 Know where I can find a little hook like that? I just Googled "plastic hook" and clicked on images to find a bunch of options. Quote
