Motorcycle Seat

Recommended Posts

I know technically this should go into the motorcycle section, but here it is anyway. :)

I am doing my first seat for a fellow, and all he really needs is a cover replacement. Can I use the same base that the current seat is on? (he said the whole things comes off.) Can I just take the old torn cover off of the padding and make a new cover while keeping the padding and the base it sits on? I was hoping to tool some nice designs into it also.

As long as the padding is still in good shape. BUT, I would suggest that if it's cheap padding (as many stock seats are) or just worn down, replace it with some closed cell neoprene foam. Most stock seat foam can't handle moisture and will break down pretty quick. The closed cell neoprene will resist water damage and also hold its shape. But, it's possible that he really doesn't want you messing with the foam either since his butt's used to it :). Check with him and see if that's something he might want after you open it up and get a diagnosis.

Agree with Cyberthrasher, if the foam is good, just replace the cover. It can be a pattern. If the stock seat is vinyl like most oem covers, he'll appreciate the leather you intend to use. It'll be warmer in winter and cooler in summer. I always put a piece of tough plastic film just under the cover to keep any water that gets through the needle holes from reaching the padding. Consider lapping your seams like roof shingles to help the water run off. If the seam is made the other way, water will collect at the seam and soak through.
