Punch Recommendation

Recommended Posts

Hi, I had bad luck with a rotary punch. The revolving part was made from cheap pot metal and broke after very little use. Do you have any recommendations about a good punch that is not very expensive? Thanks, Keith

Hello Keith.

Both Sprinfield Leather and Tandy have a rotary punch that seems to do a good job. If you don't find one there, perhaps some of the other members have ideas or take a look at those on eBay. The lightweight cheapies don't seem to hold up very well.

Good Luck.

God Bless.

Cheap rotary punches are just that, cheaply made. You want something with solid handles, not just formed from sheet metal. Solid, like a good pair of pliers. Rotary punches are handy, but can not reach very far into a project. If you have lots of punching to do, your hands will tire quickly. Solid drive punches, even with interchangeable tubes are better for a lot of your work. So get a set of drive punches, and save up for a good rotary punch later. $30 to 50 will get a good rotary punch. I've wrecked the cheap ones and pinched the palm of my hand when the handles collapse on 8 oz hard temper leather. Blood blisters are never nice!

Are there any drive punches you recommend? Springfield has a few with interchangeable punches, those seem to be a good idea.

Hello Keith.

Check the C.S. OSBORNE website. They produce a nice set of small punches. You can purchase a specific size or a set.

The punches that fit the handle from Tandy, Springfield, and others, will work but they are not extremely durable. The nice thing about them is that you can buy replacement tubes as needed.

Hope this helps.

God Bless.

There is a set of sargeant brand rotary hole punch for sale on e-bay. They are top quality and the jaws stay parallel, punching a hole straight threw the leather. These are no longer made, but well worth looking for. As for drive punches, I picked up a set for 8.99 at Princess Auto here in Canada. Probably available at Harbour Freight stateside. Gump
