LeatherWerks Report post Posted August 24, 2013 I recently purchased a Juki 1541 used from a person. It came with the standard foot but this foot won't get as close as I'd like to dog collar fittings and D-rings. Knowing nothing more about this machine other than it puts down a mighty fine stitch, does anyone have any recommendations on what feet to purchase to make it more leather friendly? Thanks, Steve
Andrew Chee Report post Posted August 25, 2013 At least get a right toe and left toe outer feet. That will get you through most situations. Andrew
Wizcrafts Report post Posted August 25, 2013 (edited) At least get a right toe and left toe outer feet. That will get you through most situations. Andrew Those are sold as zipper feet. Get smooth bottom feet or they'll leave tooth marks in the top grain. If you have trouble finding smooth bottom single toe outer feet, buy two more standard (double toe) walking foot sets and grind off the left toe on one and the right toe on the other. Afterward, get a swing-away edge guide. Edited August 25, 2013 by Wizcrafts
LeatherWerks Report post Posted August 25, 2013 Okay, will do. Thanks for the replies. A swing away edge guide sounds interesting, I'll look for one. Steve
thesergeant Report post Posted August 26, 2013 Definitely agree with the posts above. Also, I'd suggest a leather needle if you don't have it. I just ordered a swing away binder from China (http://www.kwokhing.com/) for $30. Cost as much to ship it as it did to buy the thing but we'll see how it works. Tor did a great writeup about his. I've been using a magnetic edge guide for a year and it's served me well for straight lines (like collars) but the swing away should be good for following edges for curvy items like sheaths, holsters, etc.
