modelling tool question

I've begun spending a LOT more time with the modeling tool after I finish the project. The work seems to be noticeably improving. I'm now using an off the shelf TLF tool and want to know if ANYBODY has the Peter Main tool and if it is worth the money. He says that he spends as much time modeling as he does stamping!

Any response would be great- and if favorable- where did you get yours and how much?

Great tool! Certainly worth the money. Only place that you can get it is from Peter directly. I don't know how much he is charging now. Mine is more than 10 years old so my $$$ probably wouldn't be a good indicator.

Hi Pete,

There is no comparison between Peter Main's modeling tool and any others that I have tried, which has been a lot. I got mine 10 years ago from Peter at which time it was $20. Now they are $35 and every bit as good. I do almost all my figure carving with that tool, with the exception of teeny tiny figures. For that I use a tiny spoon which I modified or one that I got from George Gross. Every other carving I do gets the attention of Peter's spoon as well. It's the only one that will smooth out edges without leaving another edge. It's true that Peter uses his modeler extensively. I'm close behind him on that one!

As it has been said, you can only get one directly from Peter.

I've not seen Peter Main's modeler (Note how I avoided saying "Peters tool") yet, but I can imagine it's worth every farthing.

I've taken the stock and rather clunky Tandy one (hey, it was free) and ground & polished it until it became reasonably useful. Basically, I just cleaned up the bad casting marks and made it smooth all 'round. I'd say you've got nothing to lose by fiddling with it. Though if you can swing it, order the nice one ASAP. I will probably troll the vendors in Michigan City in April to see if anyone's got somethign a bit nicer. I've got several of Monte's old ones, but haven't been brave enough to try any of them yet. The ol' Tandy one might be clunky, but it's familiar...

I have one of Peter's and I think it's fantastic. I've had classes with him and I've never seen him use a beveller, just the spoon. It's worth every penny even if you don't use it as much as he does (I still bevel with a tool)

I've heard about this modeling tool a few times on here, and his web site doesn't have one listed. Can someone post a pic of it so we can see what we're chasing after?

I bought on at the class he taught here in fort worth. I will post a picture of it when i get home.

Great tool by the way. Peter doesn't even use a beveler, just the modeler.

Yes, I bought one last weekend at his workshop also. If you contact him, just ask for "THAT tool" Price was $38. Worth every penny!
