Members forbeskm Posted October 4, 2013 Members Report Posted October 4, 2013 I picked up a Landis 5 in 1 on ebay for a decent price. Since it needs a few parts I was pondering taking it apart, cleaning, sand blasting, powder coat and put it all back together. Are there any guides out there other than the parts diagram? Any gotchas on taking one apart and putting it back together? Should I just replace my parts and leave it alone? Thanks, MIke Quote

Moderator bruce johnson Posted October 12, 2013 Moderator Report Posted October 12, 2013 Have fun, Every Landis seems to have a surprise. Quite a few tapered pins to hold the wheels to the shaft instead of the keys and slots other makers used. My usual gotcha is that two gears may go on either shaft. When you go to put the gear cover back you realize you transposed them. Bad words are said as you drill out the tapered pins, put new ones, and peen them again. Quote
Members forbeskm Posted October 13, 2013 Author Members Report Posted October 13, 2013 Thanks! Good to know, I have a 2 15/32 long 11/64 in diameter pin that was rolling around in the box when I got it. Any idea where it goes? It has a tapered end on one end about 1/2" covered in corrosion, and about 5/8 covered in corrosion on the other end. Quote
Moderator bruce johnson Posted October 13, 2013 Moderator Report Posted October 13, 2013 It could go anywhere there's a hole and a freespinning wheel or gear. My luck is taking them out. I drill out the peen on end and then drive the pin out. With one end smaller than the other, you stand a 50/50 chance of driving them out vs. driving them deeper. My luck runs about 30/70 even though I usually stay at Holiday Inn Express. Quote

electrathon Posted October 13, 2013 Report Posted October 13, 2013 Take a lot of pictures. I have one on my bench that I keep debating setting it up ugly or disassembling and powder coating it. Aaron Quote
Contributing Member Ferg Posted October 13, 2013 Contributing Member Report Posted October 13, 2013 I tore one down, replaced most all parts that showed wear, painted (not powder coat), greased, adjusted and sold it. The fun for me was the re-build. ferg Quote
