Rivetting Two Thin Layers Of Leather

I am struggling with a task that is actually pretty simple: Rivetting two layers of 4-5oz leather with Double Cap Rivets like this: http://d31snyb1jsf9xb.cloudfront.net/services/image.aspx/media/images/product/1379-081-L.JPG-600x

The Problem is that the male part is usually waaay too long and the result is that the two Caps arent in line. I tried to shorten the post, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt.

Do you guys have a more reliable technique?

Also, are there other rivets i could use? Sure, i could use copper rivets, but often times thats not an option for me for a number of reasons. Other alternatives?

Perhaps an additional "washer" made of leather to take up the space?

I have this problem all the time. What I do is put the post through both layers and cut it off flush with a pair of wire cutters. I then push my awl through the post from the back(they normally have a hole back there). Since the awl blade is round, this will make the end of the post round again. I also use some small pliers to smooth out the end even more. As long as the end of the post is round again it will work. Works every time for me with no reduction in strength.

If you are not using small rivets, that's part of the problem. If you are using size small, maybe try trimming them. I don't have a problem with the size small and 2 layers or 5-6.

I also use several light taps to set them and start the process, then finish with a couple stronger hits.

I'd do what Feraud said. Get a large hole punch and punch a few circles out of a scrap and then punch a hole in them the same size as you rivet to make a washer.

A small rapid rivet should be fine for two layers of 4-5oz.
