Bigpaws Report post Posted November 5, 2013 Hello all, new guy here from Northern Calif. I took up leatherworking earlier this spring, and have spent a good deal of time lurking here on LW trying to learn all that I can. To date, I've made a number of knife cases/sheaths, a couple of thumb break holsters, cell phone cases and the like. My real interest is in western tack, specifically buckaroo gear. In that vein, I've made a couple sets of bucking rolls, lots of repair/replacement stuff, and recently finished a pair of two piece 24" eagle beak tapaderos. You all are the best, and I'm grateful for your willingness to share and discuss. I hope to be able to contribute to this body of knowledge somewhere down the road. BTW....I can't seem to get a carriage return to start a new line.....any suggestions? Regards, Rick
bruce johnson Report post Posted November 5, 2013 Where at in Norcal? Also, the return key doesn't work for me either.
Bigpaws Report post Posted November 5, 2013 Howdy Bruce. I'm in the Roseville/Folsom area. Do you know a Christine Kaplan? She's from your neck of the woods, and rides/schools in the old time bridle horse tradition.
King's X Report post Posted November 5, 2013 Hello Rick and welcome to the forum!
Northmount Report post Posted November 5, 2013 I think the <return> key not working is a problem with MS IE. Try holding down the <alt> key and typing "010" on the keypad. This is the code for a line feed (LF). "013" is the code for a carriage return (CR). You can try it too and see if one or the other works. This only works on PCs, not Apple products. bruce johnson Report post Posted November 5, 2013 Rick, I sure do know Christine. she was on the museum board with me. We see her around quite a bit, although mostly at the post office lately. - Bruce
Bigpaws Report post Posted November 5, 2013 King's X, Thanks for the welcome. Northmount <alt 013> works (010 - nada), thanks for the tip. Bruce, Small world, eh? I probably won't see Christine until spring....if you run into her before then, tell her Rick Hann said "hey".
AndyH Report post Posted November 6, 2013 Bigpaws I'd sure admire to see some pics of your work- especially the taps & buckin rolls. Maybe think about posting them on here?...
Bigpaws Report post Posted November 6, 2013 Hey AndyH, Here is a pic of the taps.....will get a pic of the bucking rolls tomorrow (saddle is not here). Nothing real fancy, as it was my first attempt. The taps are fully lined and hand stitched. Lots of mistakes, but my next pair will be better. The lacing gave me fits......still not happy with the start/finish. Also, the color turned out way redder than I wanted. I used Feibing's Saddle Tan and should have diluted it....live and learn. Rick
Bigpaws Report post Posted November 6, 2013 Here is another photo of the taps. oops....file to big to upload. Will try again.

AndyH Report post Posted November 6, 2013 Very nice- I actually like the somewhat plain- you have the nice border & the decorated tip with brand, which shows well. I don't know much about lacing but sure looks good to me. I would love to make a pair of taps as it can get quite brushy around here; I've sure gotten my stirrup hung more than once! As for coloring, alot of good use & neatsfoot oil...lol. Really a nice job.
