Dresden Report post Posted November 11, 2013 Hi Everyone, I recently purchased my first leather skiving machine. Its by Golden Wheel or something like that. Anyway, not sure whats up with it. A few times now when I've gone to skive a long strip, it doesn't pull the leather smoothly through anymore. Its almost like it gets stuck and I have to assist it by pulling it through myself. Its not because the presser foot is too far down. I've adjusted the presser foot several times so that it can a thinner or thicker skive, but that has not solved it. I shot a short video (link below) of it while trying to do it. Does anyone have any idea what the problem is? Thanks so much. Not sure what I've done wrong. Thanks for your help in advance! Ferg Report post Posted November 11, 2013 Well number one, you don't have the edge guide down where it belongs. The edge guide allows you to skive different widths. Your feed roller may be out of adjustment. Do you have a manual with this machine. It will give you the method for adjusting the feed roller. You may have a feed roller that looks like stone/carbarundom, they get full of dust from the leather and need to be cleaned often. Some are metal and have grooves cut into them so they grab the leather. The grooves acquire dust also, not as bad. ferg
Matt T Report post Posted November 11, 2013 This was happening to me, even with the edge guide. The reason is because the blade is not sharp enough. You need to sharpen it with the grinder and burr tool (and continue to do this on a regular basis). But Ferg is right, you should put the edge guide on also. Lil Doodler Report post Posted December 2, 2013 Hi! Most of the skiving machines you'll buy today doesn't have a decent manual, to explain how to use it or maintain it properly. I recently added a post here on Leatherworker.net, giving the url of a great manual, and also showing a trouble shooting chart for skiving machines. http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=51399&hl=%2Bskiving+%2Bmachine It's at the bottom of that page now. Should be of help to you. That looks like veg tan leather you were skiving, which dulls the knife very fast. Also, with veg tan leather, it is better to take several passes if you want to skive a lot off. Start with a a light cut, and each pass, skive off a little more. Most of the skiving I do, and that I have seen, is done on only the edge of the leather. I skive the edge half the thickness of the material, so that it is easy to fold over. I think that is the main purpose of the skiving machine, just to skive the edge. In almost all cases, I have only seen 1/2" or less of the edge of the material skived on a machine. The edge guide helps keep the cut even and parallel to the edge. Good Luck!
