Hillbilly tim Report post Posted December 4, 2013 Howdy folks, I'd been searching for a while for a good stone for the bench i intend to build after the first of the year. I found a great deal on a 12"x18"x3" slab of granite with a smooth matte finish on all sides. Its a machinist stone so its ground flat and square. on sale for $46 and best part is free shipping! That saves more than what the stone cost! and its brought to the door by UPS too (85lbs). Been looking all summer for a decent deal, all the monument companies around here order everything in precut. so I had no luck there. free shipping is through end of 2013. I have no relation to the company, just happy to be getting a deal. look at enco.com with keyword search; granite. Thanks for reading my spiel! AndyH Report post Posted December 4, 2013 Thats good! I had been checking with our local monument co periodically with same results until... a couple weeks ago they had a beautiful piece of granite 1 1/2"thick x 28"x12" that had broken on one edge. Free! I have a 12x12 piece also but wanted something bigger...
bullmoosepaddles Report post Posted June 2, 2015 I bought two pieces of 1.5 inch thick granite from a countertop company for $30 each, They are sink cutouts. I had to smooth up the top edges a bit, the method they used to cut the stone left a few rough spots. I think they are like 30 by 20 inches. If you have a stone counter top distributor in your area, it may be worth checking into. They they pulled them out of the scrap heap, took my $60 as they smiled. electrathon Report post Posted June 2, 2015 The counter top companies have to pay money to haul off their scraps. If the stones are cut nice they are worth a few dollars, but with ragged edges don't get too free with your money.
bullmoosepaddles Report post Posted June 2, 2015 The rough edges took about 10 minutes to sand off with 100,180 and 220 grit paper on a random orbit sander. They are larger than we could have afforded otherwise and serve us well. I also have a 3 x 24 x 30 surface plate in the woodworking shop that I use for sharpening and lapping tools. But neither it or the shipping was inexpensive.
