Members escoville1 Posted January 6, 2014 Members Report Posted January 6, 2014 Hello, I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I was checking out a bag at colsenkeane.com, and the leather that he used to make the bag was smooth on both sides, about 10oz, and stiff. I've been wanting to make a leather basket, and I was thinking this type of leather might be a possibility, but I have know clue what kind of leather it is or where to find it. Is it something that the maker does to the leather or is it tanned this way? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Ed Quote
electrathon Posted January 6, 2014 Report Posted January 6, 2014 Glue two thin layers of vegtable tan, flesh side to flesh side, and you will have inside and outside of your box both perfectly smooth. Quote
Members artycpt Posted January 6, 2014 Members Report Posted January 6, 2014 From the picture is does look like a single layer that has just maybe had the rough side burnished like crazy... Quote

Members Nuttish Posted January 25, 2014 Members Report Posted January 25, 2014 That looks like greasy retanned leather to me. It might also just be waxed and burnished, but that's not a cost-effective production process, so I expect it came from the tannery that way. Quote
