Members pjfelton Posted January 16, 2014 Members Report Posted January 16, 2014 Here is a question about magnets. I wanted to make some cell phone holsters, and some wallets with hidden flat magnets, so I ordered some neodymium magnets (N42) discs. I know they are particularly strong, but they came with a warning label that said they could effect people with pacemakers, and wipe out credit card magnetic strips, and possibly harm cell phones. That doesn't sound good. After googling and writing the manufacturers, they don't deny this (probably for liability), although they label these magnets as "craft" magnets because they are definitely on the lowest end of powerful. Does anyone have any input or suggestion? I didn't think the typical magnets you can buy at the fabric store would be strong enough for leather. Quote
electrathon Posted January 16, 2014 Report Posted January 16, 2014 Many cell phone holders have magnets in them. I have one in the one I made, did not kill my phone. Blackberry holders are supposed to have a magnet in them (I think it is to make it go to sleep when holstered.) Quote
Members TXAG Posted January 16, 2014 Members Report Posted January 16, 2014 Cell phones, fine. Wallets...I personally wouldn't buy or use a wallet with a magnet in it. (I've had mag stripes screwed up from even weak magnets before, so I avoid getting my cards near them...) Quote
Members TomG Posted January 16, 2014 Members Report Posted January 16, 2014 Magnets and any card with a stripe are an invitation to having the card erased or scrambled. I'd keep them well apart. Quote Tom Gregory Legacy Leathercraft www.legacyleathercraft.com www.etsy.com/shop/legacyleathercraft
