Members Turn n Burn Posted January 24, 2014 Author Members Report Posted January 24, 2014 Tried some painting last night did the head and tail. Any advice on how to keep thw paint from gluing down the feathers? Had to go back over and lift them took some of the color out and dosnt look as good as before Quote
Members Troy Burch Posted January 24, 2014 Members Report Posted January 24, 2014 I'm sorry, I should have addressed that before, I just didn't think about it. After the carving is finished and dry I take blockout (a resist and finish product from tandy) and brush it on the areas I'm going to paint then use one of my modeling spoons that has a sharp point on one end to pick and lift the feathers or hair etc. When you get them looking like you want just let it dry, the blockout will stiffen the feathers in place and then it can be painted without any problems. Only do small areas at a time so you can get it like you want it before it stiffens, be liberal with the blockout brush it on heavy. Quote

Members Turn n Burn Posted February 2, 2014 Author Members Report Posted February 2, 2014 Thanks everyone im vary happy with this one and that dosnt happen that often. Any suggestions for a finish to use? I ran out of supersheen and thinking of going with resolene this will just be a wall hanging so not exposed to the elements here is a bit of progress Quote
Members Troy Burch Posted February 2, 2014 Members Report Posted February 2, 2014 That looks real nice. I suggest you don't use supersheen or any high gloss finish, the light will reflect off of it to much and you'll only get a nice view in just certain areas of the room. I learned this the hard way and had to take them down and refinish them, except were you want the wet look, eyes, noses ect.. Looking at the picture it already has a nice sheen when light hits it. Members Turn n Burn Posted February 5, 2014 Author Members Report Posted February 5, 2014 (edited) Thank you everyone for the complimentswith and a special thanks to Troy yoir advise saved me alot of time and experimenting. Should have asked what you would use for the body went with the guy from tandys advice and I liked how the antique looked on the hawk so went with it, I also have a 3 year old boy with me half the time so being able to use it inside when he goes to bed is helpful especially with this cold winter Edited February 5, 2014 by Turn n Burn Quote
Members Turn n Burn Posted February 5, 2014 Author Members Report Posted February 5, 2014 Had a interesing mistake happen thought I would try some sharpie on the eye added some yellow then thought of using CA glue too build up the eye and make it glossy. Apparently it reacted with the yellow but not the green/yellow or anynother I had on hand didnt get a pic of the eye looked kinda cool but not what Im looking for. But they do or could look like vary realistic blood drops. Quote
Members Troy Burch Posted February 6, 2014 Members Report Posted February 6, 2014 (edited) That looks awesome,I would have never thought you could get three shades of brown from black antique. lol, I'll be needing step by step instructions. How did you keep the gel from wipeing off to much with the blockout on it? Edited February 6, 2014 by Troy Burch Quote
