Tanthathide9 Report post Posted March 14, 2014 This is my second hide to do and from what I read this is what its supposed to look like. If u notice the black spots are the hair on the other side which is no problem. I feel like i should have shaved it to help it slip better we had a few cold spells in texas so that could be why too. I also ran into something i didnt notice on ny first hide. On the flesh side there were a few spots where it looked like it had blistered like air pockets i disnt know if this was a cause for concern or not. I still have some more scraping in some areas but im happy with the way it turned out. If anybody has any advice they could share just by looking at it as to whether I could have done something different please share. If it looks good that would be good to hear also just so I know what to expect from a good hide. You might not be able to make that assumption until u braid with it to determine if its good or not but all in all im happy with it.
oltoot Report post Posted March 14, 2014 Scrape until it all has that clear, translucent look like some of the middle already does. The flesh side white is connective tissue, muscle covering membrane, fat still adhering to the hide. Some will wait and shave that off when they split but there will be little opportunity then to get that clear, translucent look uniformly on the majority of string. Tanthathide9 Report post Posted March 14, 2014 Yessir that picture posted was 1 day, day and a half into it so I scraped more than whats pictured and that nice color has showed on 90% of the hide. The only thing I can explain were the "blister" bubbles on the flesh side....thank u for the response
bucksnort Report post Posted March 15, 2014 It appears that at least part of the areas that the hair didn't slip on might have a little fat left on which will make the hair harder to remove. The bubbling you mentioned is just caused by heat & gasses build up between the fat & membrane & the hide, same effect as bloating. I'm assuming you used a lime solution since you used the term slip. If you flesh it out good before soaking it, the hair will slip more easily. I agree with Oltoot, I'm one of those who sometimes gets a little lazy with my fleshing as long as I get the fat off good, but I don't always get that real nice translucent look over the whole hide (Thanks Oltoot). Overall looks good, should make you some nice rawhide. Buck
