DavidL Report post Posted April 6, 2014 Has anyone on this forum had a chance to try out kangaroo leather(veg or chrome) for making card wallets? I will probably end up testing a piece out, but would like to see what you think about kangaroo leather.
Ferg Report post Posted April 7, 2014 Kangaroo is one of the best leathers you will ever use. Strong, fine grain, and the colors, which are predominately earth tones, are gorgeous. Wears like iron and develops a fine patina. Best of the leathers are relatively expensive but cheaper in the long run since there are fewer defects. You won't be disappointed. ferg
DavidL Report post Posted April 7, 2014 Thats what I've heard about it, seems to be the most durable. Im curious about the chrome tanned leather strength and stretch if it is close to veg tan cow hide.
RavenAus Report post Posted April 7, 2014 It's a very good leather, very strong compared to an equivalent weight cowhide but it is expensive. Roos are culled regularly over here but only a tiny fraction go to the tannery as they have to be skinned pretty soon after shooting and the guys culling can get a lot more money playing the numbers game than stopping and skinning them so a lot of hides are wasted. Even with the culls the population of roos never seems to decline as modern farms provide so much more food than they could ever have found in the wild before, and they breed to the food source. It would look more like a cross between a lizard and a centipede.
