Need Help With Puffy Seams.....

Recommended Posts

Just hand stitched a new handbag that is sewn with the right sides together and when finished, is turned right side out. In other words, all of the 1/4" allowance hand stitched seams are on the inside of the bag. The problem is that the seams do not lay flat, they are round and puffy. If this was fabric, you would open and press the seams before turning right side out. How is this done in leather? thanks for your help!

You can flatten the seams by running a bone round to push the seams out or if that doesn`t do it tap round the seams with the flat edge of a hammer (watch the edge of the hammer as this can cut the leather) I often do this when making English saddles to get the leather to lie flat.

I generally trim the seam allowance down then run a bone folder around the inside. You can trim much closer to the stitches than you can with cloth
