DavidL Report post Posted May 26, 2014 I have some thread thats .58mm and .8mm (braided poly- flat). One thread is too small and the other is too large, 18/3 I understand is .6mm Fil au chinois 432 looks like the best size, but is too expensive for multiple spools. Barbours and Somac are the two threads in eyeing but can't figure out the sizing. Im looking for something thats .6 - .8mm for 7 Spi. .7mm as the best case - is that 18/4? Which twist for right handed sewing?? My tiger thread thread separates while I sew, I'm unsure if its left or right twist.
cem Report post Posted May 27, 2014 Are you needing waxed on unwaxed linen if you don't mind waxed Royalwood has a good selection of colours and sizes http://www.royalwoodltd.com/ their 3 or 4 ply would probably suit what you want to do my digital caliper needs a new battery so I can't measure exactly for you at the moment. You can also get wholesale pricing if you spend over $100 and they have a size/colour chart available. I used it for awhile and liked it but the stuff I was mostly repairing used Tiger so that's why I swapped to that. Tiger doesn't have a twist it's flat, twist only refers to thread that has a ply if it's separating when you sew your piercing it when going through the sewing holes. DavidL Report post Posted May 27, 2014 Il try out royal wood for the coloured thread they look promising. For the black and beige I want to go with Barbours or somac at 18/3 thats .6mm. Any one know if 18/4 is .6mm and the threads are thinner than 18/3. I don't know why, the tiger thread comes apart in the middle like almost like I have pierced it but I haven't. For the longest time I though it was my stitching that was the problem. If you could find the mm for the royal wood that would help.
cem Report post Posted May 27, 2014 Ok managed to find a battery for my digital calipers measurements in mm for the Royalwood linen are 3 ply = 0.53 4 ply = 0.68 7ply = 0.97 12ply = 1.3 The 3,7 and 12 is off the sample colour card they sell and the 4 is from some rolls I have and the colour card note though linen isn't always exact and there can be some minor variance along the thread it's not a lot though to be actually noticible to the eye though, this was both the case with the waxed Royalwood linen and the unwaxed Barbour no 6 linen I have. I haven't used the thinner Tiger threads I only use the 1mm & 1.2mm size and haven't had that problem so perhaps the coming apart only effects the thinner threads. terrymac Report post Posted May 27, 2014 Right hand or left hand twist in thread applies to sewing done by machine and what a particular machine requires. Should have no bearing on hand sewing. I have stitched a number of belts now using Tiger thread and the only problem I have had is when I stick a needle through it. The stuff is braided not twisted like you will get with the linen threads. Terry

Cant find the particular thread on this forum anymore, it was either reverse/left twist was for left handers or it was left/reverse for right handers. I think that if I am going to pay such a premium for thread I should not have to worry so much about these issues I have head about. I have been using the Crawford waxed linen, 3 ply for making wallets and I am very happy. Also if I have any bigger projects, I am making some motorcycle saddle bags now, I will use the waxed linen from Springfield Leather. I find both to be goo quality and the cost is reasonable. ChuckBurrows Report post Posted November 13, 2014 With Barbour's the first number - the 18 or 20 or whatever refers to the gauge of each individual ply/strand. The second number is the number of plys aka individual strands thus an 18/4 thread and 18/3 have the same size strands, but the 18/4 will be larger since it has an extra strand. With gauge the larger the number the smaller the strand thus 20/3 is smaller/finer than an 18/3.
