Hi Im Joe Report post Posted June 19, 2014 I really wanted a maul but man I just don't have the coin to buy one right now. So instead I bought one 10 dollar cutting board and some hardware from Ace for another 10 bucks and made myself a 20 dollar maul. I basically used a hole saw to cut disks out of the cutting board and then stacked them together. I used a wooden dowel for my handle. My very friendly neighbor let me use his drill press to make a hole right through the handle. I drill the handle hole a bit small and then hammered it on. I countersunk the top so nut on the bottom of the black disks is sunk into the handle. I have no clue how much it weighs but overall it feels way way better than the hardware store mallet I've been using. Thanks for checking it out! Rohn Report post Posted June 19, 2014 That is way cool Joe. It is always great when you can make your own tools for less than bought ones. They are probably just as good if not better too.

Thank you so much! It's definitely not as pretty as the professional custom mauls but it does get the job done! And my wallet still feels pretty good. And more importantly...my wife is happy! Nice! I love seeing homemade tools. Thank you very much. The one I really want to try is the homemade round knife from a saw blade but I just don't have the tools to do it justice....maybe someday. DuaneS Report post Posted June 20, 2014 Nice work!, Fantastic Idea!!! Hmmm... and why didn't I think of that????? and me sitting here with a whole box of small scraps that would probably be perfect for something like that.....
Hi Im Joe Report post Posted June 20, 2014 I can't take credit for the idea. I saw it somewhere else and just kind of made it my own. Here's an updated picture where I profiled the handled with a rasp and sander and then stained it with a walnut stain (I suck at woodwork...a lot but I figured this looks better and is more comfortable on the hand than leaving it as a straight dowel): Nice work!, Fantastic Idea!!! Hmmm... and why didn't I think of that????? and me sitting here with a whole box of small scraps that would probably be perfect for something like that..... Make one for yourself man! It's not hard. The hardest part was finding a drill bit long enough to go through the dowel. And then drilling it as straight as possible.
papaw Report post Posted June 20, 2014 That is the way you learn if you can do something is jump right in and hit it out of the park. Nice going.
Hi Im Joe Report post Posted June 20, 2014 That is the way you learn if you can do something is jump right in and hit it out of the park. Nice going. Thanks a lot! I definitely learned that patience pays off. I tried to take my time with the handle and it turned out pretty good!

Sona Report post Posted June 22, 2014 Nice job done here! I suck at woodwork Well, be sure that I´ve seen a lot of people who just suck a lot more than you do Exspecially with those things: don´t always think about perfection! If it is a tool you make for yourself for use, than there should be just one main criteria: Does it work? If that´s the case everything is all right, as you don´t seem to try making your money with woodworking even more (besides that: that handle looks quite good for me for someone who just do a little woodworking and just from time to time)Did you glue the rod into the handle? And did you glues thos cut out pieces together or did you just used the nut + rod to clamp it together? If you wanna go for a nice look I´d propably do some sanding on the head, but all in all it looks good. And as said before: If it works.... it works

I drilled the hole in the wooden dowel a size smaller than the metal rod I put it through. It is on there TIGHT! I had to hammer it down onto the rod like a crazy person! The disks are not glued either. There is enough pressure from the nuts and washers to hold them together tight. I definitely should sand the head. I think it will look neater that way.
