small quantities of general purpose silicone lube

From time to time I see small bottles of general purpose silicone lube for sale. Is it possible that this lube is the very same silicone thread lube that some people use in their lube pots, and of which I have about four gallons sitting around waiting to pay for itself?

It is mostly PDMS, about the most common of the silicone oils. It can be used to oil everything from machinery to condoms. Check the MSDS for any tox info, but most likely there isn't any.

Hi Art,

I called around. Basically the lube I have has more silicone in it, as well as paraffin wax and whatever else. Clearco has something called clearslip #2, which is more for spraying on surfaces to provide less friction, and has lower levels of solids , waxes , and oils. That particular bottle of silicone that Sailrite sells is most likely this or something similar.

Both lubes are similar, and toxicity is very low, but they are not the same.

Condoms.......................................................I knew this silicone lube felt familiar.

can any of you see a need for this type of friction fighting, non-thread lube, silicon lubricant? I can't. But at $4.95 for a .5 oz. bottle, Sailrite is marking the stuff up more than 30 times cost, minus cost for plastic bottle.
