Members Blackey Cole Posted October 2, 2014 Members Report Posted October 2, 2014 I wonder why the beak like look? Quote
Members dragonhawke Posted October 12, 2014 Members Report Posted October 12, 2014 it is meant to look like a ravens beak. Ravens were harbringers of death and disease in Medieval Europe Quote
Members CBlackwell Posted October 15, 2014 Members Report Posted October 15, 2014 Also the beak held the aromatic herbs that were supposed to filter the "bad air" that they thought caused the plague. It was sort of an early attempt at a gas mask. Quote
Members anhurset Posted October 15, 2014 Members Report Posted October 15, 2014 Actually, the filtering of the air is a misconception, the idea was that the disease carying miasmas could be avoided by overcoming them with other smells. In the case of Plague Doctors the prefered deterent was a sponge soaked in herb infused vinegar. Quote
Members CBlackwell Posted October 26, 2014 Members Report Posted October 26, 2014 Oh, ok. I stand corrected a bit. Quote
