keplerts Report post Posted November 23, 2014 (edited) I see Tandy has a Jerk Needle for sale. It states that it is used to sew cantle bindings. Can some one tell me what a Jerk needle does and what it is used for? How is it used, does it make cantle sewing easier and is it something I should have? Any info you can offer would be great! Thanks, Tom Edited November 23, 2014 by keplerts
electrathon Report post Posted November 23, 2014 Think of it as a crochet hook. For reaching through a hole and pulling back a thread.
keplerts Report post Posted November 23, 2014 Thanks, Electrathon. But WHY would I need to use it sewing a cantle binding? I have sewn one binding with the two needle saddle stitch and at times it was pretty hard to do. I have another cantle binding to sewn and was wondering if the jerk needle would help me. I am just not sure how it would help or how I would use it. Tom
Big Sioux Saddlery Report post Posted November 23, 2014 Typically it is used to sew a lockstitch like a machine sews. It can make sewing a cantle binding easier, especially on a real low cantle or down toward the corners where space gets tight, and I used that method for a few years. Rarely, if ever, does the finished product look as good as one sewn with a two needle method, which is why I quit doing it that way and went back to two needles. I will say the 2 needle method is easier for me now than it was years ago, just because of the years of experience gained in the interim.
keplerts Report post Posted November 25, 2014 Thanks for the information. I have a cantle to re-sew after I install a new padded suede seat. I am going to order the Jerk Needle and hope I can figure out how to use it. Thanks again, Tom
