Interesting read: http://www.cnn.com/interactive/2014/04/opinion/sutter-change-the-list-pangolin-trafficking/

Curious little critters....and being Endangered takes them off of MY 'will use it' list.

Pangolins are awesome. I only learned about them this last year. But how does the whole skin thing work? Does the skin include the scales? I would have thought the scales would come off in the tanning process?

Poor things, I always feel sorry for animals who are hunted for their supposed medicinal purposes, based mainly on tradition and old wive's tales. In a better world they wouldn't be trafficked, so we could have some guilt free thinning-the-herd pangolin hide. ;)

I didn't realize it had been added to the endangered list. That would explain it. I made this holster using it about 6-8 years ago.

As you can see the scales stay in-tact. The holster is black shell cordovan with pangolin mouthband. A customer saw it in the photo gallery on my website and wanted the same. Oh well....

Pangolins are way too cute to finish as a holster! Love them.

In the March/April issue of Leathercrafters and Saddlers Journal, there is an ad from John Fong Leather Co, listing Pangolin among the exotic leathers they can supply. check www.johnfongexoticleathers.com

Having worked 44years in Nature Conservation I can tell you pangolin are "on their way out" - and Chinese are involved in illegal trade/export on many endangered species of animals and plants (mainly trees/timber) in Africa. Please do not buy or use leather from them. Pangolin appear in schedule ii of the CONVENTION ON INTERNATIONAL TRADE IN ENDANGERED SPECIES OF WILD FAUNA AND FLORA and as such may not be traded without the necessary permits.

Ever watched those border security shows? Half the plot is stuff people ordered from china but gets confiscated because it is illegal here. They will gladly take your money for product and ship it from china, what do they care whether customs gets it or not?
