Tandy Hefty Handle

Recommended Posts

Do any of you use the Hefty Handle from Tandy when you're stamping letters? If so, did it help you get a more evenly stamped letter? Or is it just another doo-dad that doesn't make much of a difference?

Works well for me. You still have to lean it around to get an even impression, but the bigger handle gives better control.

When you set the stamp, no matter what handle you use, tap it once lightly into the place that you want it to be. You will feel the stamp bite into the leather. Make sure it didn't bounce and is sitting in the impression. Now whack it! You can rock the handle now without as much risk of getting a double impression.

Do you need a Hefty Handle? It depends. Some people like them. I find them easier to use when I am working with youth groups on stamping projects. Am I going to look for one to use with an alphabet set when there is a handle conveniently in the box? Nah. The alphabet stamps don't really need the bigger handle to press evenly. For the larger 3D stamps, a Hefty Handle and a Maul (not a mallet) is just easier, but it would be hard to tell the difference between the same impression done with a regular handle.

I use them on the bigger letters and on the 3Ds. Especially nice for taking to things where we had kids pounding stuff. They don't bounce and fly nearly as much or as far.

One thing you will see on some of the larger letters with the regular handles. I try to stamp letters on leather a little to the dry side. I have to tilt to get even impressions all the way around sometimes. The handle that fits down into the socket can flare out the top of the socket. I have had a few split.

I have 3 because I also teach kids. I find with some of the more detailed 3D stamps, like the flag and the tiger, it's a great tool.
