Members stickandtin Posted February 8, 2015 Members Report Posted February 8, 2015 We got our new Juki 1541S machine last month and are going through the learning curve on how to use it. Having never sewn with an industrial machine, this is a new "guy question". Bought some 8/32 woven welt to make some piping. Tried using the 1/4 pressor foot(I assumed 8/32 was same as 1/4)and the machine sewed into the welt. Put the 3/8 pressor foot on and the machine sewed along the edge of the welt where it should be stitching. Is this a rule of thumb....use the next size up presser foot from the size of the welt? Thanks, Ron Quote
Members Gump Posted February 8, 2015 Members Report Posted February 8, 2015 I think you would have to allow for the thickness of the material going around the welting core as part of the overall dimension. I use poly foam welting that measures 3.75mm with outdoor vinyl and a 1/4" foot. Quote
Moderator Wizcrafts Posted February 8, 2015 Moderator Report Posted February 8, 2015 (edited) Welting feet are measured to cover the wrapped piping, not just the piping cord. You must take the thickness of the covering material into consideration. I keep piping feet in my walking foot drawer in every commonly available diameter from 3/16" to 1/2". Mind you, because of the extra height of the welting presser feet, I sometimes have to raise the needle bar 3/16" and change to a system 190 needle to sew piping 1/2" across. Happily, I don't use these feet very much any more. Members stickandtin Posted February 8, 2015 Author Members Report Posted February 8, 2015 Thanks!! Being new at this, I didn't think to account for the thickness of the material around the welt ....duh!!!! LOL Quote
Members Gregg From Keystone Sewing Posted February 10, 2015 Members Report Posted February 10, 2015 This comes up a lot. For example, physical 5/32" OD cording is going to use a 1/4" cording foot set.
